Dear VNOP member,

June 20, Developmental Psychology at the University of Amsterdam organizes the second lab visit for VNOP PhD students. (The first VNOP lab visit for PhD students was at the Brain & Development Lab in Leiden).
The aim of the lab visit is to meet researchers in their daily working environment and gain information about ongoing research projects as well as the research methods they employ. Additionally we will have small group discussions about research ethics, a topic that is essential to all our work.

Below is the preliminary program of the UvA lab visit. Within the program there will be 2 methodology workshops on the following topics: Interventions, Modeling individual differences in development. The participants can attend one of these two workshops.

Summary Workshop interventie-onderzoek

In het eerste deel van deze workshop zullen twee van onze AIO’s vertellen over hun interventiestudies, waarbij zowel aandacht zal worden besteed aan het omzetten van theoretische kennis naar een behandeling, als aan de uitvoering van preventie- en behandelstudies. Bianca Boyer heeft een groot multi-center onderzoek gedaan naar het aanleren van planningsvaardigheden bij adolescenten met ADHD. Zij zal vertellen over de theoretische basis en de inhoud van deze cognitieve gedragstherapie, aandacht besteden aan motiverende gespreksvoering bij adolescenten en de eerste resultaten van de studie presenteren. Leone de Voogd doet onderzoek naar de preventie van angst en depressie bij middelbare scholieren door middel van online trainingen. De computertrainingen richten zich op het aanleren van automatische positieve informatieverwerkingsprocessen en het versterken van cognitieve controle. Leone zal uitleg geven over de studie, voorbeelden laten zien en praktische issues bespreken.
Het tweede deel van de workshop wordt er met de deelnemers gediscussieerd over de valkuilen van interventiestudies en wat de consequenties daarvan zijn. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan het werven en motiveren van deelnemers (en dan met name pubers), maar ook het ontwerpen van de interventie en placebo-behandelingen, het voorkomen en omgaan met uitval, toestemmingsprocedures en de omgang met ouders/therapeuten/leerkrachten.

Modeling individual differences in development

This workshop is about modeling individual differences in development. Do children switch strategy during a task or are they getting gradually better. Also in clinical applications and diagnostics the question whether children should be classified according to typologies or a scale is of importance: Are there, for example, different types of anti-social behavior in adolescents? In this workshop we will discuss models that can be used to test sudden jumps and typologies, so called latent class and latent Markov models. From a few examples, the DCCS task (see reference), the balance scale task, and anti-social behavior, we show how these models work and how to interpret them.
