Call for applications for the 2019 EADP-EARA-SRA Summer School

In 2019, EADP, EARA and SRA will again jointly organize a Summer School focusing on research on adolescence. The Summer School is a training ground for young scholars interested in adolescent development. The Summer Schools bring together established researchers, recognized for their expertise and teaching abilities with doctoral students from around the globe, for several intensive days of research training. The training includes exposure to innovative and creative research, as well as workshops focusing on professional skills. The summer schools have given students enthusiasm to search for scientific guidance outside of the borders of their countries and the walls of their universities. The Summer School will be held in Greece from August 26 to 29 (just before the ECDP2019 conference), with arrival on August 25. The site for the school will be in Kalamata, a nice town of the Peloponnese peninsula. The summer school will be directed by Susan Branje, Lisa Kiang, and Katariina Salmela-Aro. The Senior Scholars participating this year include (in alphabetical order): Rob Crosnoe, Linda Juang, Tina Malti, Katariina Salmela-Aro, and Michiel Westenberg, and Ellen Hamaker as school methodologist. We invite doctoral students in any part of the world to apply. A total of 24 students (8 per association) will be selected on the basis of their academic records, research experience, letters of recommendation, and overall evidence of scientific aptitude and competence. Students who apply should have their doctoral research planned or underway, but not completed, so that they can benefit from the critiques given during the school. Students will have to cover their own travel costs, with accommodations from August 25 to 29 and meals from August 26 to 29 paid for by the School. US students (whose travel costs are expected to be substantially higher) can opt for an SRA travel fellowship.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?  Send the following documents in English, saved as Word (.docx) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) files.

Is morality always and everywhere, cooperative?

Many theories in the field of morality research claim that morality is about concepts like cooperation and altruism. The theory of “Morality As Cooperation” has used game-theoretical principles to derive seven domains in which morality should occur. This provides an alternative to, for example, “Moral Foundations Theory”, which was derived in a data-driven way. To expand on this, we invite three speakers as a build-up towards a debate, entitled “Is morality always and everywhere, cooperative?”
You are cordially invited think about the future of morality research with us through this symposium, taking place on Tuesday, Nov 7th (13:30-17:00) at IPO 0.98, TU Eindhoven. The symposium will be relevant for disciplines such as (developmental) psychology, anthropology, philosophy, ethnography, evolutionary science, and human technology interaction. Participation is free of charge, subject to enrollment here.

1:30-1:45 – Introduction
1:45-2:30 – Oliver Scott Curry – Morality as Cooperation theory
2:30-3:00 – Caspar van Lissa – How to capture a theory as a latent variable model? Data and Methods behind Morality as Cooperation
3:00-3:45 – Hanno Sauer – Can’t We All Disagree More Constructively? Moral Foundations, Moral Reasoning, and Political Disagreement
3:45-4:00 – Break
Debate: Is morality always and everywhere, cooperative?
4:00- 5:00 – Oliver Scott Curry vs. Hanno Sauer, moderated by Lily Frank
The audience and moderator will vote on the winner.

The talks and debate will take place at  the Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, in the IPO building, room 0.98.

We welcome researchers who are concerned with morality, especially those working as psychologists, philosophers, anthropologists, human technology interaction researchers, and students interested in the topic.

We advise you to reserve your seat now!

Program VNOP “UvA Lab Visit” — Registration deadline June 7, 2013

Dear VNOP member,

June 20, Developmental Psychology at the University of Amsterdam organizes the second lab visit for VNOP PhD students. (The first VNOP lab visit for PhD students was at the Brain & Development Lab in Leiden).
The aim of the lab visit is to meet researchers in their daily working environment and gain information about ongoing research projects as well as the research methods they employ. Additionally we will have small group discussions about research ethics, a topic that is essential to all our work.

Below is the preliminary program of the UvA lab visit. Within the program there will be 2 methodology workshops on the following topics: Interventions, Modeling individual differences in development. The participants can attend one of these two workshops.
IMPORTANT: Please indicate with your registration which workshop you would like to attend.

For questions email Maartje Raijmakers (

Preliminary VNOP UvA Lab Visit Program 20 June 2013

10.30 Welcome Coffee & Tea
11.00 Presentation Research Developmental Psychology
11.30 Lab visits / Poster session
12.30 Lunch
13.30 Workshops (Interventions / Modeling individual differences)
15.00 Tea / Coffee
15.30 Workshop Research ethics
16.30 Drinks

Summary Workshop interventie-onderzoek

Modeling individual differences in development

This workshop is about modeling individual differences in development. Do children switch strategy during a task or are they getting gradually better. Also in clinical applications and diagnostics the question whether children should be classified according to typologies or a scale is of importance: Are there, for example, different types of anti-social behavior in adolescents? In this workshop we will discuss models that can be used to test sudden jumps and typologies, so called latent class and latent Markov models. From a few examples, the DCCS task (see reference), the balance scale task, and anti-social behavior, we show how these models work and how to interpret them.
