Morality, Environmental Sustainability, and Education
Preserving the natural environment is a moral issue. But how can the appeal to moral values effectively counter climate change, loss of biodiversity, environmental pollution and other degradations of the natural environment in wake of the Anthropocene? The Association for Moral Education invites researchers, practitioners and activists to engage in a critical dialogue in order to better align moral and civic education with the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced. While connections between environmental sustainability and morality are multitude, the fields of environmental, moral and civic education, have been largely separated up to date. This split is unfortunate as it prevents researchers and practitioners from exploiting synergies in linking these fields. What moral foundations and value-orientations best support environmental education? How can moral and environmental education inform each other with regard to best practices? How can educators exploit synergies, so that instances of civic education become opportunities for environmental education and vice versa? These are leading questions to be explored during the conference. Submissions are invited from a broad range of disciplines including but not limited to anthropology, education, environmental studies, indigenous studies, philosophy, psychology, political sciences and sociology. In addition to engagement with the main conference theme, submissions on any topic of moral education are welcome as part of the general conference program.

The conference will be hosted at University of Ottawa.

We will offer you different demos of our research at CAS, such as a coding scheme for observed prosocial behavior in children and monkeys, Virtual Reality methods, a social interaction task for toddlers, and an app to facilitate children’s disclosure of sexual abuse experiences to their therapists. Prof. Catrin Finkenauer will give a keynote lecture on interdisciplinary challenges in youth research. In addition, there are two interactive panel sessions; 1) how to conduct research among hard-to-reach target groups, and 2) solutions for challenges in interdisciplinary research. The day will end with drinks. All participants are invited to bring a poster of their own research (it does not have to be ‘new work’, it could also be an existing poster e.g., that you recently presented at a conference) and present it during the drinks reception.

Student-assistant position, Social anxiety lab, Leiden university

Dr. A. Miers is looking for an enthusiastic, independent, and ambitious (research) master student to help investigate the effectiveness of a new, brief, intervention to help socially anxious youth. This research is funded by a grant from Leiden University Funds. The aim of the project is to test whether positive feedback from age peers can modify negative thinking in high socially anxious teenagers. PhD candidate Developmental Psychology RadboudUMC

https://mysteryscenemag.com/07auvhega9 PhD candidate in Developmental Psychology

http://hifa.org/fneti59i Job description

We are looking for a highly capable, eager, and intrinsically motivated PhD candidate. The project is embedded in our developmental psychobiology research group (DPBLab; PI: Prof.dr. Carolina de Weerth) at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in Nijmegen (the Netherlands). This position is part of a program started with a personal VICI grant awarded to de Weerth by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The grant is on children’s gut microbial colonization in relation to stress early in life and later brain functioning, behavior, and cognition. The colonization of the gut by microbes is of interest because it is assumed to play an essential role in children’s physical, behavioral, and cognitive development.

The aim of this PhD project is to examine whether a naturalistic stress-reducing intervention program based on caregiver-infant contact can positively affect infant gut microbial colonization and infant behavioral and cognitive development. In an RCT, caregiver-infant contact in 3-month-old infants starting center-based childcare will be increased in the intervention group during the hours spent in childcare. Trained volunteers will provide this extra caregiver-infant contact.

For more information: see www.dpblab/research/opportunities or mail Prof. Carolina de Weerth: carolina.deweerth@radboudumc.nl

REMINDER Job opening: Assistant Professor in the field of Aging/ Lifespan Psychology, Tilburg University

The Tilburg University department of Developmental Psychology is looking for an Assistant Professor in the field of Aging/ Lifespan Psychology, tenure track (1.0 fte, 5 years). Deadline for applying: August 31, 2019.

Description

Due to increasing life expectancy, society in many western countries is aging rapidly. Advancing age increases the risk for cognitive, physical and social challenges, which can have a negative impact on physical and mental health and engagement in social activities. Hence, adaptive coping with these age-related challenges can significantly improve individuals’ quality of life and contribute to aging proactively. However, individuals are differently affected and react differently to age-related challenges. We are interested in which personal characteristics and behaviors (e.g., genetics, brain mechanisms, cognition, life-style, self-regulation, motivation, personality) account for these inter-individual differences and act as protective or risk factors in the diversity of the aging process. In addition, we are also interested in examining which and how these personal characteristics and behaviors can be adjusted and influenced to the better.

We are looking for a candidate, who likes to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. This includes collaborating with members of the department on cognitive aging, personality development and/or forensic psychology. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to research collaborations across departments at the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences with a focus on successful aging.
